New study shows mens income falling as womens income rises

New study shows mens income falling as womens income risesNew study shows mens income falling as womens income risesA new National Bureau of Economic Research working paper finds that mens incomes are falling, while womens incomes are rising. An analysis of age cohorts in the United States finds, according to NBERs August research digest, that the median male who turned 55 in 2013 earned $136,400 less in lifetime income - measured in constant 2013 dollars - than a man of the same age 16 years earlier.Men who entered the workforce in 1983, the paper found, have seen their lifetime income decline by 10-19% compared to men who entered the workforce in 1967. For women, median lifetime income increased by 22-33% from the 1957 to the 1983 cohort - though, the size of this gain welches largely attributable to the very low lifetime income of the earliest cohort.According to the paper, this decline in lifetime income is slightly offset by better benefits, such as health care and pension con tributions. But, as the NBER digest notes, even using an upper bound estimate of the growth of such benefits, the researchers find that the 1983 cohorts medianlifetime income welches $96,100 lower than that of the 1967 cohort.Whats behind the dip?The researchers attribute much of the dip in mid-career mens income to what they earned in the early years of their careers. As NBER reports, The median income for a 25-year-old in the 1967 cohort was $33,000, compared with $29,000 (inflation adjusted) in the 1983 cohort. That means, unfortunately, that if your income was depressed in the early years of your career, youre likely still paying for it today. The broader trendThe findings are consistent with other data showing that young men are increasingly falling down the economic ladder, as male-dominated jobs are automated or off-shored. Meanwhile, fields that tend to employ more women - like health care and professional services - are growing.Despite the slip in mens incomes, womens incom e in the U.S. still lags behind that of men. What you should doIf youre unhappy with your salary, the first thing you should do is ask for a raise. As George Anders writes for Ladders, most people wait to be given a raise, hoping good work will be recognized and rewarded. Instead, its generally the case that people do better when they ask for raises. Its also important to know your worth, nameyour number, and know when to walk away.

55+ And Need To Get Hired Heres How To Do It.

55+ And Need To Get Hired Heres How To Do It.55+ And Need To Get Hired Heres How To Do It.In just the past 7 days, zu siches whats happened with 3 job search candidates over age 55 one received and accepted an offer one received 2 offers and is presently weighing his options and one got an offer in a writing for a job she applied for about 2 weeks ago. Lets take a deeper look at our third candidate, to walk through the precise steps that took her from online application, to phone interview, to in-person interview, to written offer. Her name is Sheila. She works at the senior level in operations in the health care sector.Sheila came across a VP, Operations role online, which caught her interest not because she particularly loved the description of the role, but because she tapped into her existing knowledge of the industry and realized this was a growing organization with major plans for continued expansion in the near future.Takeaway 1 See the larger picture not just the job, but the companySheila followed the directions indicated and applied for the role. Immediately prior to that, she researched the decision makers at the company. For a VP-level role, minimally, you need to aim to reach the SVP. Ideally, aim for the President or CxO. In Sheilas case, she identified the CFO. She messaged the CFO a short schmelzglas of introduction, mentioning the top 3 skills she offered that directly related to the role, and asking if the CFO was open to holding a quick conversation.Takeaway 2 Make direct contact with a real and relevant actual human beingThe CFO replied within 24 hours and they held the call. Elevator pitch at the ready, Sheila discussed those top 3 skills, and exactly why they would prove beneficial in the new role. She also gained some insight through this conversation about what was important to the executive leadership team as they continued to solidify their imminent growth strategy. After another 24 hours, the CFO invited Sheila in for an in-person int erview with the CEO.Takeaway 3 Know and state your concrete value in a way that directly relates to THAT companyThe interview planned with the CFO and CEO actually expanded into a panel interview with 2 additional decision makers, including the current VP Operations, who would be transitioning out of that role to a different position during the corporate expansion. In addition to them all hearing Sheilas qualifications, they also heard the pointed questions Sheila brought to the table, the answers to which revealed some growing pains, and she offered preliminary solutions.Takeaway 4 Interview them as much as theyre interviewing youSheila walked away from the interview confident, but not hitching all her hopes and dreams to that particular opportunity. In fact, she came back to her home office and resumed where she left off in her search.Takeaway 5 Search, search, and search until you land and START that jobHeres the offer Sheila receivedThere are a few morals to this storyExpand you r thought process when youre searching online. The jobs you see advertised are just a window to the organization. When you look through a window, youre looking for something specific in a job search scenario, that means someone specific. When you find that someone, say something to the person that will matter to that person, so they take notice. These 3 candidates all over age 55 followed similar paths to success just this week. Thats because they applied the simple strategies you need for job search today, which are dramatically different than the last time you probably looked for a job. If you want to know exactly how you can find the real decision maker you need every single time, with precision (not the shot in the dark method), then find out what successful jobseekers are actually doing to get employed. A doctor gives orders for living a life of abundance

A doctor gives orders for living a life of abundanceA doctor gives orders for living a life of abundanceDr. Julie Rosenbergis a physician, keynote speaker, leadership coach, avid yogi, and author ofBeyond the Mat. Her passion is helping people embrace healthy lifestyles and enhance personal leadership skills in order to thrive. She joinedTasha Eurich, an organizational psychologist and theNew York Timesbestselling author ofInsightfor a conversation on how to stay centered in a busy world. This conversation has been edited and condensed.TashaYou and I first met as members of a group selected by Marshall Goldsmith of 100 leaders in their fields, who come together and share their skills and knowledge. I was so struck by what a unique set of experiences and expertise you have- youre a physician and a trained yoga instructor. Yur lifes work is about the intersection of those two things. Im curious, what inspired you to take this very unique and interesting path?Follow Ladders on FlipboardF ollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraJulieI worked as a pediatric oncologist in a large cancer center for many years and then evolved my career to drug development. Finding the balance between being in the trenches, but also being an observer was important for me, because a lot of the time when were so immersed in the work we dont see whats actually before us.I found that I was using many of the principles and practices of yoga to manage corporate life because its so demanding. It has so many uncertainties and so many things that can be difficult and complex to manage. The story of yoga really caused me to auszeit to reflect. The practice creates space to think, and in that thinking space we become more creative, more aware. Being aware of my environment and aware of others is just so critical that I really wanted to share it. What you need to do to succeed may be as simple as pausing and reflecting, and makin g a better decision in the moment. The practice creates space to think, and in that thinking space we become more creative, more aware.TashaYou talk in your bookBeyond the Matabout this idea of enlightened leadership. In a really practical sense, what does it mean for the leaders of today to be enlightened?JulieFirst and forefruchtwein, it means that we can all be highly effective leaders. Those who are enlightened leaders have a sense of servitude. Theyre committed to making the world a better place, to their ongoing growth, to transformation and a purposeful leading and living. In these commitments, we can make a very high level contribution to our work, to our families, and to society as a whole. When we really adopt that schrift of a viewpoint, it allows us to reach this place of greater enlightenment because we can know whats critically important, and what will serve us and others in the short-term and in the long-term.Those who are enlightened leaders have a sense of servitude. Theyre committed to making the world a better place, to their ongoing growth, to transformation and a purposeful leading and living.TashaIf somebody wants to take one step forward to become more enlightened and achieve some of those benefits you just talked about, what are one or two practices that they could start doing right away?JulieWell, the work that you do, Tasha, in terms of exercising a level of insight and self-awareness, is critical in taking that first step. We need to be open to ourselves. We need to be aware of whats going on in our bodies, in our hearts, and then we really can live in a way that that allows us to be aware of ourselves, our environment, and to serve others in a better way.Another thing to do is to define the purpose of our work. How do we have a more purposeful and fulfilled life following this clear introspection, and becoming more self-aware of whats really driving us?The last thing Ill emphasize is self-care. Youve got to put your oxygen mask on fi rst. You cannot serve others until you serve yourself. You need to be grounded and really be in a place that supports your own health and well-being to be able to serve others and do your work well. I think this is an area where people really fall down so much. They hear that, they listen to it, but its in one ear and its out the other.Youve got to put your oxygen mask on first. You cannot serve others until you serve yourself.TashaIn my bookInsightI talk about my love-hate relationship with self-care practices like meditation. I know I need to do it, I know its good for me, I dont particularly enjoy it. What would you say to the Type A person who is reading this- how can they break some of those practices of self-care into their life in a tangible, practical way?JulieI also find that difficult at times and, quite frankly, I dont always have the time. However, most of us can find three to five minutes in the morning or evening to sit quietly and meditate, focusing on our breath, foc using on a single point. Whenever you can find a few moments, pause, sit quietly, minimize your distractions, focus on your breath, or a single point, like a candle flickering. Thats been the key to my success. I call it meditation on the move.TashaIts such a simple insight, but I had never really thought about that until I read your book. I dont have to sit cross-legged in a dark room for thirty minutes. I was reading your book on a plane this week and realized, Wow. I could put this book down and do one of these great two minute exercises you give right now. And so, I did. That was just such a big aha moment for me- everybody has time where were waiting. When youre at the doctors office, or on the train, or in the car, or on a bus- all of those opportunities provide us such a great space to practice even if its for two minutes. Most of us can find three to five minutes in the morning or evening to sit quietly and meditate, focusing on our breath, focusing on a single point.JulieWhe n you tried it on the plane for two minutes, did anything shift for you?TashaWhenever I meditate, even for just a minute or two, I feel calmer in that moment, more clear-headed. The key for me is to do it in the times where I feel like I have the least amount of time. Meditation helps me the most when Im stressed.Another thing Ive learned from you comes from the practice of yoga satya, which is Sanskrit for truth. We all want truth about the universe, but to get there weve got to start with the truth about ourselves. What do you think the relationship should be between self-improvement and being content with who we are? How do you find that balance in your own life? And then, what would you recommend for leaders who are on that journey?Whenever I meditate, even for just a minute or two, I feel calmer in that moment, more clear-headed. Meditation helps me the most when Im stressed.JulieContentment is often hard to find when were always striving for more, better, or different. We have to be able to define what is truly important to us. I just lost an executive position in a major company due to a corporate restructuring, and basically there was nothing I could do about this. So, at that time, I had an opportunity to reflect and determine what was important for me for that next step in my life, in my career. When this first happened, I had a lot of anger, but then I tried to breathe through it. I tried to sit quietly and find a space of contentment. What I realized from this is that the opportunity for me to be able to deal with that challenge is actually one that maybe I needed. I have to redefine what is important for me. What I could do if I could find a place of contentment, instead of rage, upset, and anger? How can I use this to become more creative? How can I make this work for me? I really encourage everyone to find whats important, sit with it, find space, find a place to reflect, and to just be, and really try to move from there, because passion and purp ose really do lead to a life of abundance.Passion and purpose really do lead to a life of abundance.TashaThats so true, and that personal example you just shared reminds me of our colleague, Whitney Johnsons work, and she talks about disrupting ourselves. Sometimes we are disrupted without wanting to be disrupted or without requesting that we be. One thing she says that I think is really powerful is that our constraints are our motivators, and if we dont have constraints thats when we are less creative, less resourceful, less successful. I think thats a good message for all of us.If you wanted to impart one daily practice to the folks who are reading this that will help them become a more enlightened leader, what would that practice be?JulieBreathe. The breath is really something that were often not aware of. In times of stress of anxiety, we often hold our breath. The breath opens space. I know folks are busy, so Im talking about one minute- focusing on the breath can open space, c an calm the body down, can help you feel less anxious, more grounded, and make better decisions, and can also help you find that space of contentment.TashaThose are doctors orders, right? So weve got to follow them.JulieWell, it would be nice if everybody followed doctors orders, but even better if they made their own orders to live and lead a better life. This article first appeared on Heleo. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

5 Lessons Ive Learned From Being Laid Off

5 Lessons Ive Learned From Being Laid Off5 Lessons Ive Learned From Being Laid OffWhen I lost my job in January, amid a company-wide restructuring, I welchesnt surprised. My co-workers and I had witnessed numerous reality-show-like rounds of layoffs in the months leading up to our dismissal. Even though I knew it welches coming, what shocked me most about being let go was my initial reaction to it.Despite the cardboard box waiting on the front porch to carry my laptop and cell phone back to corporate headquarters, I remained in denial for the first few days. (OK, maybe weeks, but whos counting?) Id never lost a job before, and I was surprised at how completely disorienting it was.But as the months have passed, in between sending out resumes and fighting the urge to take my dream road trip (which includes hitting as many major league baseball parks and brew pubs as possible), Ive picked up some hard-won wisdom about this unemployment business. If youre in the same boat, zu siche is the advice Id pass on. 1. Mourn the Loss and Then Move OnThough I knew the end was looming, actually hearing the words, Your role within the company has been eliminated, left me feeling strangely unmoored. Throughout the days that followed, my thoughts played their own game of Whac-A-Mole as colleagues Id miss, assignments Id never complete, and upcoming events I wouldnt attend randomly flashed through my mind. It seemed strange to be mourning the loss of a job Id often blamed for my new forehead wrinkles, so deep toddlers could bathe in them. Yet there I was, mooning over the relationships and connections Id made that, unintentionally but invariably, would weaken over time. While I hated feeling like a pitiful sad-sack, my emotions are not so uncommon, according to licensed professional counselor Terri DiMatteo of Open Door Therapy. Those dealing with job loss may be surprised to find themselves experiencing grief associated with loss of identity, of professional colleagues, and of the work routine, DiMatteo explains. The unexpected silver lining, however, can be the discovery of renewed passions that lay dormant while employed. On that note2. Rediscover Your InterestsOnce Id come to terms with the fact that my former employer wasnt going to reappear like some sorry ex-boyfriend and beg me to come back, I embraced the hobbies Id enjoyed before my work life devoured my personal life. For example For the better part of two years, Id felt horribly guilty each time my children drooled at the sight of an Olive Garden commercial. Wow theyd say in unison. That looks amazing Id cringe as Id close the microwave door on plates bearing an assortment of leftovers. Each time Id tossed a frozen pie into the oven, I could feel my Italian grandmother giving me the evil eye from the great beyond. But when I was no longer rushing to meetings, compulsively checking email, or preparing for a phone call, I found I had the time to whip up my own commercial-worthy entrees. While Im not saying Ive earned a spot on Top Chef just yet, Ive definitely rekindled my almost-forgotten love for cooking. Additionally, I finished reading four novels in my newfound free time. While I was working, I was lucky if Id finish one every eight months. Ive had library fines that could rival the national debt and, yes, Ive been the gal who shows up at your book club meeting strictly for the wine and cheese. Not anymore3. Dont Let Fear Be Your Life CoachWhoever says dont make decisions based on fear hasnt been pricing childrens footwear or summer camps lately. And yet, it seems like advice worth heeding. About a month after losing my job, I was offered a position that, at another time in my life, I wouldve considered an amazing opportunity. But because of a lengthy (and costly) commute coupled with an off-hours shift, I had to turn it down. Though I was scared to pass up this career move, I knew if I accepted it, I would be miserable and end up right back where I started- searching for a new job. While its easy to panic when youve sent out your 100th resume and received few calls for interviews, trust me Jumping into a badeanstalt fit out of desperation isnt the answer. 4. Resist TemptationFor the last two years of my career, I was in love. With my laptop. But when I lost my job, our affair came to an abrupt end. It was with great sadness that I bubble-wrapped my beloved and said goodbye. It was barely on its way back to corporate headquarters when I decided to pull myself together, get back out there, and find a replacement. But, with no new job in sight and smarting from sticker shock, I realized I couldnt afford to blow more than two weeks of unemployment when I already had a perfectly fine (albeit outdated) model at home. The siren song of the nap is another temptation to avoid. Many winter afternoons, I was dying to curl up with a blanket, but I knew if I gave in this would establish a bad habit Id only need to break once I was working again. Instead, I joine d a gym, which gave me an excuse to get out of the house each day (not to mention a reason to shower). I even survived my first spin class and found it cathartic, with the emotional highs and lows of Eat, Pray Love (but, sadly, none of the pizza). Resisting the urge to hide out at home can also help when it comes to making connections that could lead to your next position. Try to stay in the mix, as landing a job is often about who you know, DiMatteo also advises.5. Keep Your Sense of HumorWhen faced with updating an ancient resume or ditching the sweatpants and stuffing myself into a dress and tights to meet potential employers, I quickly realized, if I didnt keep laughing Id soon be crying. Plus, after interviewing for the first time in a few years, Ive learned that these arent your parents job application questions I found that maintaining my sense of humor helped enormously as I was forced to explain what Id choose as my personal theme song or why I was the best candidate for th e position in 160 characters or less. Lets face it No one wants to hire someone who lost her wit along with her weekly paycheck. Staying positive and focusing on all the things Id missed while working has taken the sting out of the initial shock of being laid off. Im choosing to look at this as a well-earned break with ample time to research my next move- at least until Im dipping into my 401(k) or relocating to a trailer park. The Three Rules To A Great Interview Outfit 1. Fit And Quality Ask anyone in fashion a nd theyll give you the same advice. A great outfit isnt about being uber-trendy or spending a tonne of money. Its about investing in quality pieces that fit you perfectly. The key, as Vivienne Westwood puts it, is to buy less, choose well. Fit and quality are king. And no, you cant have one without the other. Buy a suit that fits you perfectly but is poorly constructed and uses cheap fabric, and youll end up throwing it out next season because its either fallen apart, or doesnt breathe properly. Buy a well-made suit that oozes luxury but is the wrong size, and youll have wasted your hard-earned dollars on an outfit that bunches in awkward places or drowns you in excess fabric. Make sure you buy well-fitted clothes by Knowing what a good fit looks like (and feels like) on you Getting yourself a great tailor To invest in quality pieces that stand the test of time, look for Wardrobe staples that are versatile and can be mixed and matched with other items Pieces that are timeless and will transcend seasonal trends Neutral colours like navy, grey, black or white Garments made from high-quality fabrics like wool, cashmere and silk Does this mean youll need to drop some serious coin for an awesome interview outfit? Absolutely not. Just buy the best quality your budget allows, and aim for garments that will help you build a solid career wardrobe. 2. Emulate The Workplaces Dress Code You only get to make a first impression once. So, dont waste it. Do your homework and find out what the companys dress policy is. Why? Because your outfit is the perfect opportunity to show the interviewer that youre down with the company culture, and that youd fit right in with the team. So stalk the companys social media posts, check out their website or better yet, ask around. If youre not 100% sure, remember its always better to be slightly zu chic angezogen than underdressed. Depending on the field you work in, and the company youre applying for, youll also want to consid er Covering up any tattoos if the workplace is a conservative one. If youre umming and erring about whether you should wear a tie, wear one anyway. If youre a chef, builder or fitness professional, bring your tools and an appropriate change of clothes just in case theres a practical component involved in the interview. Most interviewers will give you a heads up about this, but its better to play it safe. 3. An Outfit That Feels Like You If it doesnt feel like you, dont wear it. Being comfortable = being confident, and thats advice straight from thefashion editors at ELLEmagazine. The last thing you want is to feel self-conscious, distracted or uncomfortable while youre trying to answer those tricky interview questions. So make sure you put together an outfit that lets your personality shine through, is super comfortable and represents your personal brand. You want to wear pieces that make you feel amazing because if you look great, youll feel great too How To Dress For A Corpor ate Job Interview Professionals Lawyers, accountants, business executives, financial advisers, realtors, law enforcement. The two colours are far more versatile working across all four seasons and can be mixed and matched with all patterns and colours.
