5 Essential Tech Devices for Your Job Search
5 Essential Tech Devices for Your Job Search This Tech Tuesday were examining the devices that are essential to your job search. Job seeking can be a long, difficult process, an almost 9-5 occupation in itself. Make it easier with technology! Searching for a job is extremely time consuming. Its important to stay ahead of fellow candidate competition to ensure no opportunity is missed. Technology can enable you to move faster and more efficiently, so you can continue marketing yourself, searching and applying for jobs, and scheduling interviews. This is where being connected will set you apart. So it turns out your parents were wrong, those countless hours of being online werent in vain! Spending money on tech when unemployed might seem like the last thing you want to do, but this equipment may decide your next job offer! Heres our five essential devices for job seekers: The latest smartphone: If youre going to an interview, pulling out the latest smartphone is impressive gesture. This might sound superfluous, but the latest must-have device will potentially spark conversation with the interviewer, and will demonstrate how tech-savvy you are! Smartphones are the modern day equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife. Being able to use a smartphone to stay up-to-date with emails and job applications on the go could be the decisive factor for employers. You could discover a job vacancy via mobile you would have otherwise missed! So go on, treat yourself to an iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy Alpha. Think of it as an investment. Also itll change the way you interact with media, and you can start tweeting in style! Battery extender: External battery chargers may seem as the last thing on your to buy list, but dont underrate their usefulness. If you constantly use your smartphone and portable devices, youll be well-aware of questionable battery life of modern devices. With a quality portable battery charger, you will never miss any important calls again! Look to sites like Amazon for positively-reviewed battery extenders before purchasing. There are continually great deals on these portable devices, so shop smart and to choose the best option! Personally speaking, I have used a battery extender for day-long events and they have been a life-saver for continuing productivity. If you continuously travel with tech, this is a must-have accessory. A good example of a quality battery extender is RAVPower Battery Extenders for not only your smartphone, but your other USB powered devices! External hard drive: Buy an external hard drive! This advice doesnt just apply to a job search but to life. As our society becomes more reliant on technology for important documents, its vital to have backup versions of documents available. Hard drives may seem pricey, but there is nothing worse than losing a computers worth of important files, documents and pictures. Starting your CV from scratch after a hard drive failure is never fun, believe me. Back up your data for peace of mind. Transferring files between computers is also relatively easy using these devices. We recommended the Transcend Military-Grade Shock Resistance Hard Drive (shown above), so if you drop it, you can feel confident you wont lose the data! Also, for extra security, grab a USB flash drive! Mac PC (plus even a tablet): You probably have some kind of computer at your disposable, but is it the right kind of system for you? Depending on your industry defines whether a Mac or PC is suited to your needs. Macs are great for media and design jobs, for example, while PCs are great for programming and IT jobs. This should be your central hub for your job search, so replying to emails and job searching on this machine should be fast. If your machine is rapidly declining in speed, it might be time to upgrade. If you have extra disposable income, you can also consider purchasing a tablet. This may seem like a expensive addition, but if your career is very visual-based, being able to present your content in slides on a tablet is an impressive way of showcasing your work. Smartwatches! (maybe): Smartwatches, The latest gimmick to hit consumer wallets! Admittedly this isnt vital to everyones job search, but it could make a huge impression on employers to show you want the latest conceptual technology! Wearable technology could improve your job search by increasing your exposure to jobs, either on social media or via emails! The same rule is applied to all conceptual-based technology. For example, if you attend an interview for a tech-based company wearing Google Glass you will make a lasting impression! Staying ahead with new technology shows your up-to-date and open to new innovations! What devices do you use in your job search? Let us know in the comments!

Does the Way You Look Affect Your Prospects at Work
Does the Way You Look Affect Your Prospects at Work In an ideal world, your chances of employment would be based purely on your sheer talent, skills and ability to do the job. Itâs true that beauty is only skin deep, but does how you look affect your chances of getting a job? Of course, no one likes to admit this taboo subject. To use looks as a basis for employment is illegal, and rightly so. But, letâs face it, one of the first things we do, subconsciously, when we meet someone is judge their appearance. First impressions are crucial, especially in the world of business. Studies have shown that a woman who wears a lot of makeup tends to be thought as more capable than women who wear only a little or no makeup. Talk about judging a book by itâs cover! The assumptions are made by a subliminal part of our brains. So while itâs taboo, itâs entrenched in human nature and our psyches. A womans earning potential is reckoned to reduce the more her waistline increases. Somehow this doesnât seem to have the same effect for men. Think of all the big bellied bosses around the board table. The double standards of the working world never appear to change that much, even in the 21st century. Of course, if there are any obvious issues with appearance then itâs often easy to get them fixed. Bat ears, crooked teeth or a gappy grin can be a source of embarrassment. It neednât be so, though. Now weâre all grown up; adults can make their own choices when it comes to their appearances. The amount of adults having cosmetic procedures that would normally be done in childhood is on the rise. Most of us know someone who has had orthodontic braces as an adult. Adult orthodontic treatments are more common than you think. Kidâs who didnât want unsightly braces can now have their teeth straightened almost unnoticed. Invisalign is a near on invisible brace. If only these had been available when we were younger! The nickname âbrace faceâ might never have happened. Itâs telling that men are largely unaffected by this phenomena. As man ages, heâs âdistinguished.â As woman ages, she just gets old. A man with grey hair is a silver fox, a woman with silver strands is haggard. Itâs a real shame that in this day and age these attitudes are still so prevalent. Sexism is still prevalent. Despite laws being passed to ensure equal opportunities, the glass ceiling seems to be still in place. This has led to rise in women over 30 spending money on all the treatments available to help stop the effects of ageing. Botox, once the reserve of the rich and famous is available on just about every high street. The UK skincare market is worth hundreds of millions and is on the rise every year. Your looks shouldnât affect your job prospects, but human nature is what it is. If you believe youâre being discriminated against in any way at all at work, then you should seek help straight away. Are extra-curricular activities worth doing Should I, solely, divert 100 % of my attention to my studies
Are extra-curricular activities worth doing Should I, solely, divert 100 % of my attention to my studies At the end of the day students, in particular A level students, want to make the grade in order to gain an unconditional offer from either their firm or insurance choice. As Iâve mentioned before, no one looks forward to clearing and, therefore, keep their heads in their books. The same applies to students at university no one wants to fail their exams, and face difficulties in obtaining the desired grades, which will later on be essential in securing the desired gradual role. So keeping your head down and studying is always good advice. However, if youâve planned and coordinated your work properly, thereâs no harm in giving yourself a break and, moreover, a peace of mind by doing other activities. Extra-Curricular Activities Getting yourself involved in extra-curricular activities is a fantastic way of making links with organisations youre interested in, building experiences, and developing your skills, provided you out the effort into it. Iâve seen certain individuals, at voluntary events, who donât show much enthusiasm and shy away from full-on involvement. Donât do that! Youâre only wasting your time by not makign the most of the opportunity. Before I point out the benefits of involving yourself in extra-curricular activities, I suppose itâs a good idea to briefly mention whatâs out there to participate in. Firstly, thereâs the voluntary sector. Thereâs a large variety of organisations offering various activities to engage yourself in and, additionally, acknowledge your efforts with a certificate, which could potentially boost your CV. One organisation which I would recommend is Worldwide Volunteering . This organisation targets people of all ages, and provides opportunities in different locations. Gap Year If youâre planning on taking a gap yea, consider travelling. Thereâs a plethora of organisations that are well known for providing you with an opportunity of a lifetime. Organisations such as Bunac UK, Camp America, Original Volunteers, VSO and Projects Abroad are fantastic to get yourself involved with. However, if youâre still at school, college, university, or not too keen on spending too much time away from home, then take a look at Original Volunteers. They offer great experiences which only require you to be away for a maximum of two weeks! If volunteering abroad isnât your âcup of teaâ, then consider travelling in order to gain experience of the world around you. Open your eyes a little and gain knowledge of various cultures around the world. Duke of Edinburgh Award Apart from travelling, there are other exciting ideas to get you âcoopedâ up in. The Duke of Edinburghâs Award Going for Gold is always the key! Taking up this award would be a fantastic experience in itself. This Award provides you with the opportunity to explore your strengths. In fact, what I should really be saying is that it will challenge your strengths, both physically and mentally. If you can get your friends involved, that would be even better. Similarly, for girls and young women, taking part in Girlguiding would also lead to fantastic opportunities, resulting in amazing achievements. The Queenâs Guide Award , the highest attainable award in Girlguiding, is also a highly recommended award to give you that extra push. Both the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Queens Guide Award are great for building up your confidence, gaining skills and illustrating independence. Extra-curricular Activities and Studies However, referring back to whether you should just only focus on your studiesget involved in activities that are related to what youâre studying. This would be particularly useful for university students. The best way to start off with is to join societies. This is especially important, from what I know already, for Law students who want to become lawyers. Apart from meeting their academic requirements, employers love to see how youâve made your mark at university. The Street Law Project is very popular amongst universities and, therefore, it is encouraged to participate in. Try to get involved in all the activities that societies, related to your course, advertise. Remember, if youâre aiming towards working for a large company or firm, they usually look for applicants with a good ground of specific skills. Most common ones include team work, communicational and commercial awareness. Others that are not so obvious, or individuals donât tend to value the importance of, include relationship-building and stamina and energy. These aspects are vital and absolutely achievable if you join and commit to societies. Aspiring lawyers, again, Pro Bono! If youâre serious in pursuing a career in law, LawWorks provides numerous amounts of Pro Bono work for undergraduates, postgraduates, and even those that are lawyers already. Finally, as it involves everyone, regardless of what youâre studying, take up a hobby! Pick up something you love, and develop it! Build up your character. Gain some experience in something you have a personal interest in. Most importantly, speak up, have a voice and take action! Iâm going to condense the benefits of extracurricular activities into three distinct words; Maturity, diversity and creativity. Nike states âJust Do It!â So do it! Image Credit: ink in grey 3

8 Methods for Inspiring Curiosity and Motivation in Your Team CareerMetis.com
8 Methods for Inspiring Curiosity and Motivation in Your Team What motivated you to begin reading this article? Are you an intrinsically motivated seeker of knowledge? Or maybe youâre doing assigned research for a team project? We all have intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for doing work. Smart team leaders know how to motivate individual employees by leveraging personalities and needs. Here are several methods to inspire curiosity and motivate your team.1) Use All the Resources AvailableevalevalMotivating an entire team isnât merely scaling up individual motivations. Team dynamics need a specialized approach â" and inspiration and curiosity are key. For inspiring a teamâs interest, learning is mandatory. So, use affordable and easy-to-get resources. For example, have team members subscribe to a regular newsletter highlighting innovations in your field. Have them subscribe to a new podcast. Or give them a list of the best documentaries of 2018 to spark fresh ideas, educate, and inspire them.2) Help Your Team Use Its SEEKER InstinctNeuro scientist Jaak Pankseppâs most significant contribution to employee motivation comes from his discovery of the âSEEKERâ system. This primordial instinct pushes us to search our environments for information to help us survive. Without exercising this instinctual drive, humans feel depressed, stuck, and uninspired. For employees, the SEEKER system shutdown translates into low job satisfaction, boredom, and lack of purpose. To promote the SEEKER system in your team, give them the freedom and flexibility to determine, not what, but how to complete a goal. Often, leaders gather their teams together to discuss how to approach the next product â" injecting your ideas of how things should proceed limits outside perspectives. Team members will interpret your suggestions as non-negotiable parts of the process This reminds each person of the interconnectedness of the team and team of the value of the individual contributor.4) Research Your CompetitorsOpposition research can be as benefic ial to your teamâs productivity as it is to keeping up with your competition. Nothing pulls a team together quicker or motivates them to succeed as having a common enemy. So, encourage and budget resources for your team to research what the other side is doing.Include every member by dividing the research responsibilities. And make time for reports in your meeting agenda. Inspire and education the team together, and motivation will be contagious.eval5) Diversify Your TeamTeam diversity isnât some politically correct attempt to be a âwokeâ company. Studies show that teams with ethnic and gender diversity maximize profits and make smarter business decisions. Compared to homogenous groups, diverse teams remain more objective and tend to reexamine facts more before making a decision.evalTeams with more cultural and gender diversity bring more innovative products to market.Higher objectivity of a diverse team makes it more reliant and focused on facts and data. That means emotion s and personal feelings are less likely to get in the way of decisions. Better innovation leads to more team wins and increases morale. Consider diversity when forming in-house teams or hiring new employees.6) Cross-Train Your Team MembersWhen forming your team, choose members based on their strengths. But also cross-training team members to motivate them and keep things fresh. By rotating jobs, members get to learn a new skill, grow in their current role, and get a new appreciation for other responsibilities. The result is a decrease in boredom and increase in intellectual stimulation.Cross-training shows your team members that youâre investing in them and their careers. Job rotations give members opportunities to flesh out their resumes. And it lets you identify highly-motivated employees for advancement. Cross-training also allows you to:Improve customer service with a broader employee knowledge baseCut on-boarding costs by leveraging internal resources instead of hiring new pe ople7) Help Them Manage a Good Work-Life BalanceTeams are most inspired and creative when they can focus on their work. Increased stress and guilt are common outcomes when work-life is out of balance. And productivity and quality suffer as a result. Team members have more focus, feel less stressed, and are more motivated when they know things are okay at home.Worries about home life are inevitable. But employers can cut their impacts by offering the following benefits:Flexible work schedulesRemote work opportunitiesTechnology to accommodate remote workPaid time offUnpaid leave of absenceSponsor family eventsAside from these company perks, managers and team leaders can help their employees the most by drawing sharp lines between work and home. Set and manage expectations that work email is for work hours, weekends are for personal time, and vacations are for taking. But offering perks like paid time off wonât benefit your team if no one ever uses them. So, model an excellent work-li fe balance by taking advantage of them yourself. Bring stories of your relaxing weekend with the family into the meeting room. Share why family time is valuable to you and your work. Your team members will follow your lead.8) Model Inspiration and CuriosityThe bottom line: the most significant source of inspiration and motivation for your team is you. Your team members pay attention to you. If your team isnât feeling inspired, it may be because youâre not modeling the right behaviors and attitudes.evalTake a personal inventory and be honest about what you discover. Are you motivated to learn new skills? Does recognition inspire you to excel? Do you understand how to do every job on your team? When is the last time you took a day off?Hold yourself accountable to the same standards as your team. Being a good example is the greatest source of inspiration a leader possesses.

9 Core Behaviors of People Who Positively Impact the World - Kathy Caprino
9 Core Behaviors of People Who Positively Impact the World Part of Kathy Caprinos new series Accessing The Most Powerful Version of You Look around you and youâll see three kinds of people â" those who dislike their work, and complain bitterly, those who just tolerate their work and see it as a paycheck and arenât looking for more (or believe they canât have more), and finally, those who love their work, and relish it. The third category is a small subset of all professionals globally, but this group stands out because these are, most often, the people who change the world for the better. My work as a career success coach, speaker and writer connects me with people whoâve made a true and measurable impact in the world â" including well-known experts, authors, researchers, journalists, scientists, innovators, business geniuses, and entrepreneurs. But among this group of world influencers there are also everyday people who have found a special niche in which theyâve contributed at the highest level. And most often, those people are coming from a place of love and compassion, and deep service. Itâs critical to note that people whoâve made a real difference arenât all privileged, advantaged or âspecialâ by any stretch. Many come from disadvantaged families, crushing circumstances and initially limited capabilities, but have found ways to pick themselves up and rise above these circumstances (and their genes) to transform their own lives and those around them. Researching these makers, shakers and disruptors, and working with my own clients who shape the world around them in powerful and constructive ways, Iâve observed 9 key behaviors that set them apart â" habitual ways of behaving and approaching life and work that distinguish them from those who long to make a difference but canât or wonât find the way. The 9 core behaviors of people who positively impact the world: They dedicate themselves to what gives their life meaning and purpose. Thousands of people today donât believe in meaning and purpose as something to discover or pursue in life. But those with positive influence feel otherwise. They have found that there is a purpose to their life, and that purpose usually involves some aspect of turning their âmess into a message,â or using what theyâve learned (often the hard way) as a means of being of service to others. People with a sense of purpose are driven, focused, committed, and lit up from the inside unable to be deterred or distracted from what they believe is the reason theyâre on this planet at this time. This sense of meaning and purpose gives them inexhaustible drive and offers guideposts to follow along the path â" it informs them of what they wish to attend to in life, and what they need to walk away from because it doesnât support their higher purpose. They commit to continually growing and bettering themselves. People who impact the world for the better know that they are not perfect. They understand how their knowledge isnât âcompleteâ â" there are always gaps, biases, limitations and prejudices, and new places to go with their expertise. Yes, there are powerful narcissists aplenty, but their influence isnât positive or helpful in the long run â" itâs damaging and destructive. Innovators who positively shape the world come from a âbeginnerâs mindâ and a loving, compassionate heart â" with an openness to see, learn, and experience new things on the way to being a better servant of the world. They engage with people in loving, open, mutually-beneficial ways. Those with huge positive influence understand the power of relationships, connection, and engaging with the world openly. Theyâre not afraid to get âout thereâ â" connecting with others, generously sharing their knowledge and talents, offering their authentic and often contrarian viewpoints and opinions. Theyâve pushed beyond any introversion, shyness or reluctance to be who they are, and have learned how to relate well with others and build mutually-supportive relationships that catapult both parties to a higher level. They know that positive, supportive and authentic relationships are the foundational building blocks to anything and everything they want to achieve. They invest time and energy not in what is, but what can be. The people Iâve interacted with and interviewed whoâve made a huge positive impact in the world donât settle for conformity in fact, theyre often demonstrated traits that make them a rare breed. When they see something that agitates and disturbs them, they strive to know more, get to the root of the challenge, research and understand the contributing factors, and arrive at new solutions. They observe gaps and mistakes in common thinking and behavior, and trust themselves in their belief that itâs time to push the boundaries of whatâs accepted. They want to affect change because they believe change will bring a better way to live. They embrace critique. The most powerful positive influencers donât need or want to be ârightâ â" they want to grow and be more effective. For that to occur, they walk right into critique, and they embrace challenge. Theyâre not afraid to put their work out there for others to poke holes in. They are strong and confident in the face of opposition, yet know how to integrate constructive feedback to strengthen their work and ideas. They engage in open dialogue and welcome scrutiny. They spread what they know. Weâve all met authors or âexpertsâ who keep their knowledge secret, close to the vest. Theyâre afraid to let it out for fear someone will steal it or make money on their ideas. This is the opposite of the positive influencerâs mindset. Those who make a true positive difference canât help but share and teach what theyâve learned. They donât see their knowledge as just some commodity to sell, as a meal ticket or a money maker â" they see it as information that has to be shared with the world for its betterment. They believe their ideas and innovations are of use and value to others, and canât help but share those openly, and teach others what theyâve learned. They understand the universal principle at work â" âthe more you give, the more you get.â They uplift others as they ascend. Youâve experienced, as I have, scores of âleadersâ and high-achievers whoâve gotten where they are by stepping on the heads and backs of those in the way. These are not true leaders or influencers because their power is a sham â" it was obtained unethically and is shallow and weak, and canât be sustained over the long haul. I have encountered power-mongers who were crushing and cruel to their subordinates and I wondered when they would finally reap what theyâve sown. Over the long term, this day always comes. On the other hand, people who positively impact the world not only obtain amazing results in their work, but their process of obtaining these results â" how they operate in life is also inspiring and uplifting. They are happy to help and support others, and have an overflow of positive energy that enriches the lives of everyone they work with and connect with. These positive influencers want others to grow. They walk away from âsuccess-buildingâ opportunities that will be hurtful and damaging to others. They know that those unethical, demeaning or destructive approaches go against the very meaning and purpose theyâre committed to. They view the journey as the goal. Positive influencers donât take short cuts or go for the quick buck or easy answer. They donât view some arbitrary goal or outcome as a destination, because they believe there is no end â" itâs all in the journey. Itâs about what theyâre learning, experiencing, and building that helps others, and for that, there is no defined end point. They embrace failure more readily than others as âinformationâ that guides them. They are more fluid and flexible, and more open to the âhowâsâ because their ultimate goal is not about upholding their title, salary, reputation, stature or power, but about new ways to help and share what they know. They use their power and influence well. Sadly, itâs a common occurrence in business today to witness power and influence being wielded as a weapon. It hurts and destroys. Positive influencers use their power well and wisely. They understand the widespread influence they have, the power they have to build up and elevate, or tear down, and they have closed their power gaps to become strong yet compassionate and caring. Those who impact the world for the better are careful and judicious with their words, actions and behaviors. They care deeply about their leadership and communication process and style, and the influence they have. They take it seriously, as a special honor and responsibility not to be flaunted or misused. They understand their special role, and accept it with grace, compassion, and care. Are you longing to make a positive impact in the world?
